Checking a-TPO

A thyreoperoxidase antibody test (a-TPO) is a blood test that measures the amount of antibodies to the enzyme thyreoperoxidase (TPO) in the blood.

TPO is a key enzyme involved in the production of thyroid hormones, and antibodies to TPO may indicate the presence of autoimmune thyroid disease.

The a-TPO test is primarily used to detect autoimmune thyroid diseases such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis (the most common cause of hypothyroidism) and Graves' disease (the most common cause of hyperthyroidism).

Persons with symptoms of hypothyroidism

when the thyroid doesn't produce enough hormones. Symptoms can include fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, chills, constipation, depression, memory problems and a slow heart rate.
