Hepatitis C virus (HCV)
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) blood test is a laboratory test designed to detect infection with the hepatitis C virus.
This test primarily focuses on detecting antibodies to HCV in the blood, which are proteins produced by the immune system in response to infection with the virus. If antibodies to HCV are found, it means that the person has been infected with hepatitis C virus in the past, although this does not necessarily indicate a current active infection.
In the event of a positive HCV antibody test result, further testing, such as an HCV RNA test, is usually needed to detect the presence of genetic material from the hepatitis C virus and confirm an active infection.
