The TSH (thyrotropic hormone) blood test is a laboratory test that measures the amount of TSH in the blood.

TSH is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that regulates thyroid function. The thyroid gland, located in the front of the neck, produces hormones that affect many functions in the body, including metabolism, growth and development.

The main purpose of the TSH test is to assess thyroid function. High TSH levels may indicate hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), while low levels may indicate hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).

Persons with symptoms of hypothyroidism

when the thyroid doesn't produce enough hormones. Symptoms can include fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, chills, constipation, depression, memory problems and a slow heart rate
